President's Message for November 2018

Model A Friends,

The fall tour began in the rain this year. I was able to road test my rebuilt vacuum wiper on the way to Pauls Valley. Vicky couldn’t stop laughing at the antics of the little wiper blade as it wiped at incredible speed, then slowed, then stopped and then wiped at incredible speed. I looked anxiously at the headliner in the fordor for leaks, but it stayed dry. It appears that my resealing efforts worked, at least for the time being. The worst thing about driving in the rain is that the car will have to be washed.

The first item on the Friday agenda was a tour of the “Forgotten Wheels Museum”. This is a small museum in Davis that has a variety of antique cars, trucks and motorcycles. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Vicky and I got in our car Friday morning to join the caravan to Davis and the unthinkable happened. It wouldn’t start. However, Greg Hoyle and Will Langford and others sprang to action and started trouble shooting the ignition system. After a lengthy investigation the ignition coil was the problem. Greg had a spare coil so old not-so-faithful started and we were ready to hit the road. We missed the Friday tour of the museum, but went there on our own Saturday afternoon.

Friday afternoon the caravan went to an amazing stretch of road near Davis called Magnetic Hill. If you stop your car on this road it appears that the car is headed downhill. When you release the brakes, the car appears to roll backwards and uphill. Saturday we paid a visit to the Chickasaw Cultural Center south of Sulphur. This is a beautiful facility with numerous buildings. The exhibit center is a museum of Chickasaw culture. It is a fascinating place that I plan to revisit. Saturday afternoon was spent in Sulphur checking out the antique stores. The fall tour finished with a Saturday evening meeting at the Hampton Inn to award some great door prizes.

The Mitchells and the Dusenberys planned and executed an awesome agenda for this year’s fall tour. I commend all four for their leadership and careful planning. Thanks all.

I hope to see you on the road in your Model A!

Jim Yates, 2018 President.
