Dear Members --
For those who weren't able to attend our January or February Club Meetings, I'd like to let you know about an upcoming vote to amend the Club bylaws at our March meeting. The text of the proposed changes is at the end of this message.
In January, the Board voted unanimously to support a proposed amendment to the Sooner Model A bylaws that would add Web and Social Media Officer as a Board position. Currently that position is a standing committee, which does not require Board Meeting attendance.
Board member and Sooner Scuttlebutt Editor Chuck Dusenberry proposed the change to the bylaws at our January Board Meeting. His reasoning, which the Board agrees, is the Web and Social Media editor in our modern age is akin to the position of Scuttlebutt Editor. It is important to have both the Editor and Web and Social Media officer present at Board meetings, as well as the regular club meetings and other events.
Our website and Facebook page are the voice of the Club as heard by the outside world, just as the Scuttlebutt is the voice of the Club to our members. The member responsible for updates and communication on behalf of the Club through our website, Facebook page and other social media sites holds a lot of responsibility, and the Board agrees it's time for this to become a permanent Board position with the same weight as the Scuttlebutt Editor.
The majority of our new members who have joined in the last several years have made their first contact with the Club through our website or Facebook page, which is maintaned by our current Web and Social Media Officer, Will Langford. I myself am one of those members who first learned of the Club from this very website.
Will, who was not aware of Chuck's proposed change until it was presented at the Board meeting, has not objected to the proposed bylaw amendment, and has agreed to join the Board if the membership approves the proposed change.
As more of our lives take place online, the more important the Web and Social Media Officer position becomes. In past years, Will has held the Web and Social Media position, along with various official Board positions, but currently holds no Board position, hence the impetus to update the bylaws.
The general membership will have an opportunity to cast their secret ballot on the proposed change to the bylaws at the our March 10, 2019 meeting.
If you are unable to attend our March Club Meeting, you are welcome to mail in your ballot to the Club's P.O. Box as listed below. We must receive your ballot prior to Friday, Feburary 8 in order for it to be counted.
For mail-in ballots, there won't be a special form -- just write "for the proposal" or "against the proposal" on a piece of paper, and put it in an envelope. If you'd like your vote to be secret, please place that envelope in an outer envelope. Make sure to stamp the outer envelope, and include your name and address in the return field so we can verify who has voted in order for it to be counted.
Please note that only current paid members may cast a ballot, and dues are paid annually in January. You are welcome to mail in a check with your ballot if your 2019 dues are delinquent.
If you have any questions, or need assistance voting, please don't hesitate to call or email me.
